ANACHRONIC WIND (2022) - 10 min
This is Tehran, year 2022, during the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. A wind blows from the past. the wind tears through the fabric of society, disrupting its natural rhythm and causing a sense of stillness and frustration. It is a wind that carries with it the weight of outdated systems and structures, leaving people feeling disconnected from the present and unsure of the future.
The society is stuck in a liminal state, caught between what was and what could be. The anachronic wind hinders every movement, creating a sense of inertia and frustration, leaving the people feeling trapped and unable to make meaningful progress. But amidst the stillness, there is a glimmer of hope. A hope that comes from the recognition that change is possible, and that new paths can be forged.
Background
It’s 2022, Tehran, Iran. The country is grappling with multiple crises. The aftermath of the bloody Aban protests, which took place in 2021, still weighs heavily on the minds of its people. The protests were sparked by the state's decision to raise fuel prices, but quickly grew into a wider movement calling for greater political freedoms and economic reforms. The state's harsh crackdown on the protests led to numerous deaths and arrests, and left a deep scar on the nation.
On top of that, Iran is also suffering from waves of pandemic, with new variants of the virus spreading rapidly throughout the country. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and many people are struggling to access medical care. The economy has taken a hit, with businesses struggling to stay afloat amidst the ongoing restrictions and lockdowns.
However, it is important to note that the conflict in Iran is the result of a complex interplay of historical, political, and social factors that extend back decades. The tension between modernity and tradition, for example, has been a central theme in Iranian politics since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, and has been shaped by a range of historical and cultural factors.
